FRANK STELLA
Born in 1936 in Malden, USA.
Lives and works in New York and Newburgh, USA.
Frank Stella was first influenced by Abstract Expressionism before making a turning point in 1958 with his black paintings: depersonalized works with repetitive and cold technique and forms. In opposition to the traditional romantic conception of creation, making the work a reflection of the artist, the creator is withdrawing this time. The interpretive dimension is also denied: for Stella, “what you see is what you see”. These experiments are considered essential to the development of minimal art in the 1960s. Shortly after, he reintroduced polychromy in his shaped canvases with unconventional structures (X, Y, curves, etc.). In the 1970s, Stella integrated volume and collage into his work, his paintings almost being able to be likened to reliefs. Contrary to the asceticism of black paintings, this less known second period is called baroque, a name it owes to the extravagant shapes, colors and spatial illusions employed by the artist.
